Top bar hives are a horizontal format for beekeeping based on the way they’ve been keeping bees in Africa for thousands of years. You only need to lift one bar at a time, about 2 kg, and everything is at waist height.
These hives are handcrafted using 40 mm plantation-grown radiata pine for the sides and bottom, weathertex cladding for the roof (35 year guarantee), and treated pine legs. This is the Australian version of the TBH which is shallower and sightly wider than the U.S. version. Roof tilts back and is held open with two gas struts. There are 28 numbered bars and 2 follower boards. Bees enter through three holes in the middle of the hive. If requested, we can fit an optional glass viewing window and cover for $100, we can also paint and seal it for an additional $100.
